Field
Field is an ongoing series exploring how landscapes—both physical and psychological—shape memory, narrative, and identity. Conceived in 2023 and developed through residencies with Artica Svalbard, Arctic Circle, and Spitsbergen Artists Center, the project grew from my encounters with the Arctic landscape as a place of extraordinary splendor, profound environmental change, and contested histories.
Through extended periods of research and travel across the Svalbard and Jan Mayen archipelago, Field builds on the visual language of my earlier series Majestic and Crossing. Intricately carved woodcuts bring together observations of the landscape with fragments of experience, memory, and imagination. These evocations move between the specific and the elusive, linking distant geographies with traces of memory while reflecting on the fragile, continually changing relationship between land, memory, and belonging.
Woodcut printmaking is central to this process. Its materiality, repetition, and layered processes transform observation into physical traces, translating encounters with place into image and carved wood. The print becomes a trace of encounter, memory, and place—an interval between what was seen and what remains.
